Overview

Pop-up cinema booth

  • The Frame magazine is looking for ways to expand and diversify its readers base. We noticed that a magazine as a printed media can be less accessible than other media forms which reduces its ability to initially engage people not priorly familiar with arthouse cinema.

In order to promote interest in arthouse cinema as well as the magazine itself we came up with an idea to screen selected films in a convenient and accessible way.

  • This mobile theatre has the same goal as the Frame magazine: to make arthouse movies more accessible and bring them to the public eye. It grabs attention easier than any static magazine display could do. Inspired by Guerilla Cinema movement we bring community watching experience of a cinema theatre to any location while preserving chamber atmosphere, traditional for the genre.

LOCATION: Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery, Woodinville

    MEASUREMENTS cart: 30” x 63” x 73”

    MATERIALS: steel, plywood, vinyl, cardboard

  • The target audience for the Frame pop-up cinema booth are patrons and guests of cafes, restaraunts and similar establishments where the booth is currently stationed. The crucial part here is in selection of partnering businesses so that their style and atmosphere would match the aestetics of arthouse cinema. For example, european style cafes and wineries would be a better match than sport bars and fast food restaraunts.

Solution

Inspired by the guerilla cinema movement, I came up with an idea of a cinema booth mounted on a electric cargo bike. Being compact and mobile it is suitable for temporary stationing at partnering businesses and events, to bring cinema directly to new audiences in a convenient form. Visual style of the booth is derived from the Frame magazine: visually striking large typographical pattern gives an artsy look, while black and white color schema dials it down to ensure the booth design is not louder than the films it screens or the establishment it is currently located.

An important element of the proposed design is transmitting audio via wireless headphones, alongside subtitles displayed on the screen. This approach eliminates the issue of sound interference between the film and the surrounding ambience of a cafe or venue. Moreover it offers a unique intimate yet shared viewing experience similar to small undeground cinema theaters.

The viewers who enjoyed the film might be inclined to learn more about arthouse cinema from the Frame magazine available at the booth.
